Joshua Tree National Park:
Park Stewardship Through The Arts (PASTA),>
residency program

Randy Polumbo thanks Joshua Tree National Park for its sponsorship through PASTA (Park Stewardship through the arts, founded and run by Tim Terrell) of much of this body of work, and a second residency this summer at "Lost Horse," in the park.  Were it not for the generosity and commitment of these organizations and their leaders, this work would not have been conceivable.

Lately I have been working on a series of compositions of found and custom-crafted elements, animated with electronics and interactive sensors. Each piece tells a story over a brief interval that reflects on the interaction and the purpose of the parts, focused by interaction with the viewer.

Parts are transplanted and mechanically employed, often at odds with their original purpose. A toilet becomes a Narcissistic reflecting pool. An enema is fitted with tiny solar panels and an engine and born again as an
elegant space probe. A car muffler and some condom castings become a
chrome Venus of Willendorf, that from a different light could be an invading alien, tracking and responding to any motion around it. I enjoy that small children like my work and take great pride in the many levels on which it can be enjoyed; I prefer an open reading to a strict equation.

The food chain, libidinal structures, and alternative readings of mass media are all themes that fascinate me. My work catalogues evidence as I uncover it. A symptom might become the illness or a part might be dissected into a microcosm for the whole. I also find scalar symmetry inspiring, where similar patterns in behavior or function exist from the herd, to the individual, to the cell."
